I live in Philly. I'm obsessed with bags (especially messenger bags, but also interesting designs and even the cool stuff they contain). If you see me, I'll be probably be rocking this bag by Girl.Bike.Dog.

Sewing Machine Recommendations?

As you may have read, I’ve taken my first real steps in to bagmaking. Rather than scratching the itch, it ignited a new level of obsession in me. In order to truly understand the craft, to really GET the art of making bags, I wanted to do it myself. And my experience, though short, was incredible.

So I’ve decided to buy an industrial machine.

Cory from Leif Labs gave me some advice a while ago. He suggested the Thompson Mini-Walker and the Tacsew 111.

The machine I used last week was the Juki 1508N. That was an incredible experience, but $2,000 is entirely too rich for my (or my wife’s) blood.

So, dear readers - does any one have any other suggestions? Any advice or things to think about? I’m considering the Sailrite LS-1, but the 1/10th HP and the smaller size does make me a little nervous.

You can email me (thebagcollector at gmail), find me on twitter (@thebagcollector), or leave a comment.

Help, plz.

  2. moderndaynomadicperson answered: I’ve used the Sailrite for light equipment building/repairs and uniform modifications/repairs, and it’s pretty good for light duty.
